Chewing Gum Can Help Guard Against Cavities

Posted .

Don’t let the threat of cavities take your smile over. Instead, why not chew cavities to help you prevent cavities? Did you know, sugarless gum can help prevent tooth decay? Well, it’s true! That is why, our team here at Derby Family Dentistry in Derby, Kansas, is happy to talk to you about how chewing gum can help guard against cavities.

According to the American Dental Association, also known as the ADA, if you chew sugarless gum for at least twenty minutes after a meal, it could help keep cavities at bay. Because of the increased flow of saliva which chewing gum can generate, you can neutralize the acids from bacteria in your mouth and wash away lingering bacteria or food particles in your teeth. By always choosing sugarless gum, you are also keeping sugar from causing other cavities, which can destroy your teeth.

Keep in mind, chewing gum is not a replacement for brushing and flossing your teeth. It is still imperative to brush at least twice a day for two minutes a day, as well as flossing regularly. Chewing gum can be thought of as an aid to help after your meals before you have a chance to brush and floss your teeth.
