Food Ingredients to Monitor in Your Diet

Posted .

Did you know that your diet plays a key role in your oral health? Some food ingredients can be especially influential, and not in a pleasant way. This can be of significant concern especially when you are wearing braces. Listed below are various food ingredients and types of food to monitor in your diet:

– Sugary foods in high quantities are bad for your oral health. You’ll especially want to avoid sugary sweets and treats, as they can be converted into harmful acids in your mouth that cause dental erosion. Should you choose to eat them, help yourself to sugarless gum or mouthwash afterwards to help wash away its harmful effects.

– Sticky and chewy foods can harm your teeth because they are prone to linger long after mealtime, leaving more time to cause tooth decay.

– Acidic foods and beverages like soda, citrus or sour sweets are capable of eroding the tooth enamel and should be limited or avoided altogether. If you want to partake, mix them with other foods that are high in their pH level to help neutralize the acids.

– Be careful what you bite. Tough or hard foods may break teeth, especially those that are more fragile. Exercise caution when eating any foods or substances that may seem tough or hard.
